Beth Radloff - "You Poor Pretty Little Bird" Framed Art (Once Upon A Time: A Fairy Tale Art Show)
Artist: Beth Radloff
Medium: Acrylic Ink & Colored Pencil
Size: 15" x 19"
About this piece:
Being of small stature, Beth has always been drawn to "little person in a big world" narratives
like The Borrowers, Redwall, and Thumbelina. Suddenly being shrunk down to the size of a salt
shaker and imagining the studio she is sitting in from such a dramatically different perspective
tickles her brain. They would make a tiny home out of trash and talk to frogs all day. The world of
Thumbelina is her ideal fantasy... without all the arranged animal marriage of course.
Beth chose to paint the moment that Thumbelina discovers the frozen swallow during her winter
spent living with the Field Mouse. She was struck with the image of a bird sprawled upon a rock,
looking both tragic and sacred to the marveling child. Its halo suggests death and foreshadows
its role as her savior. In graphic relief under this kismet moment, the mouse and the mole
continue on their way with the little girl in tow, unawares.
